Surah Al Baqarah (2:186) – Free Association Therapy

And when My servants ask you concerning Me, then surely I am very near; I answer the prayer of the suppliant when he calls on Me, so they should answer My call and believe in Me that they may walk in the right way. [2-186]

M Shakir's Quran Translation

Free Association Therapy

In treatments of such psychological problems like stress and conflicts and anxiety and depression lot has been said. Freud (father of psychology) used 'Free association therapy' in his therapies. In this process his clients (patients) use to build trust on him first and then used to share each and every single thing of their life with him. By the process Freud mentioned that when a client shares his feelings, his unconsciousness and the sub consciousness bursts out and he feels mentally relaxed and satisfied. But the therapist has to be a very good listener and very keen observer and he should know the person's personality fully.

Quran gives us this concept 1400 years back. We 'freely associate' our self with Allah while doing Dua and Allah is encouraging it by saying "when My servants ask you concerning Me, then surely I am very near; I answer the prayer of the suppliant when he calls on Me". The fact is that many of the clients of Freud did not share the real inner feelings with him but Allah is fully aware of our personality, He is the closest to us, He knows our weaknesses and He is the one who can listen to us the best. When we share our thing with Allah SWT openly our consciousness and sub-consciousness becomes light and therefore we don't feel any stress, depression, anxiety or worry.
